ABSTRACT

Hearing loss is a highly prevalent and significantly disabling health condition, and the most common treatment is the provision of hearing instruments. Despite the availability of evidence supporting positive health outcomes associated with hearing instrument use, hearing aid adoption remains low. Why is this the case? Research investigating factors that contribute to hearing aid adoption focuses mostly on the role of personal factors (degree of audiometric hearing loss, personality, attitude etc) and demographic factors like age and gender, and only focuses somewhat on the role of external factors (cost, counselling etc.).

Such approaches have undoubtedly increased the field's understanding of why some people tend to obtain and use hearing aids. Critically, however, there has been an under-emphasis on understanding how interpersonal and contextual factors contribute to hearing aid adoption. This is somewhat surprising given decades of research on decision-making processes from other fields such as social and cognitive psychology. To address this gap in our understanding of hearing aid adoption, our research has endeavoured to apply frameworks from other fields and apply them in the context of patient decision making in audiology.

This presentation will consist of a brief theoretical review of frameworks relevant to better understand decision-making processes, a review of how modern data acquisition techniques can inform hearing rehabilitation research, a review of several large-scale studies investigating hearing aid adoption and associated hearing rehabilitation outcomes, and several concrete takeaways designed to inform clinical practice.

PRESENTER PROFILE

Gurjit Singh

Dr Gurjit Singh is a senior research audiologist at Sonova AG. In addition to being a clinical audiologist, he completed an MA in social psychology from the University of Waterloo, an MSc in audiology from the University of Western Ontario, and a PhD in cognitive psychology from the University of Toronto. Broadly, his research investigates factors that contribute to success with hearing instruments and other forms of audiologic rehabilitation. Gurjit is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at Ryerson University, and is an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Toronto.
